After 2 days of working on my washer and researching for hours and hours online, I came upon your site and I was delighted to find someone who enjoys fixing washers on the side. It’s not a business for me, just a hobby to usually fix family or friends’ washers or dryers.

Someone in my area was giving away a Whirlpool Cabrio washer model WTW6600SB1 because they said it wouldn’t spin or agitate. Their repairman quoted them $300-400 so they just decided to get rid of it.. I saw it as a challenge, and if I can fix it, it will be way nicer and newer than my current machine.

I have run the diagnostic tests many times. The only errors stored are all F71 errors.

I took the inner tub and agitator out of the machine (which was very difficult at first) and completely cleaned the buildup. I did find a towel that was in between the inner and outer tubs on the bottom and removed it. I sanded the drive shaft which is not very smooth in one section. It is still a bit rough in a 2inch section but better than before.

I made sure the connectors were all secure on the control board as well as on the motor underneath.

These are all suggestions I found online that dealt with spin problems..

The automatic diagnostic tests now are fine until C8 where it seems to get stuck and not spin..just slightly turn while the agitator moves back and forth minimally.

When I run the manual diagnostic tests, everything works. All speeds of spin work fine, the agitator works fine, the lid lock works fine..

So, everything I read is that the sudsing error can also mean mechanical drive friction or that the basket does not engage properly during drain in order for it to spin.

I have tried to run 3 cycles and used a washing machine cleaner the 3rd time, and each time the machine flashes with an sd error.

I don’t think it has to do with suds at this point.

I’m sorry for being so long winded, but I am wondering with your expertise if you could give me any advice on what to do next? How do I get the basket to engage during drain?

Thanks for the email. I had one of these Cabrios that did nearly the same thing. In diagnostic mode it wouldn’t get passed C8 and then in regular spin cycle it would get stuck on about 12 minutes.

The tub has to be able to float up when the tub fills with water in order to agitate and then slide back down the shaft as that water is drained out in order to go into spin cycle. The issue that I experienced was the hub on the basket. The hub was a bit stiff, so it got stuck and wouldn’t allow the basket to drop. I haven’t wrote a post on that yet. The hub is a cheap part. I would try that first.  The hub is #8 on the diagram.

In your case, from what you are saying, I would think it is either the hub, or the drive shaft needs to be replaced, maybe both. You can get both from Appliance Parts Pros. They offer a 365 day warranty so if the parts don’t fix your problem you can return them. The only other thing that it could be is either the pressure switch is bad (control board) or there is a hole or gunk in the hose that runs to the pressure switch from the tub.

Parts Needed

Motor coupling #285753A

This was a used appliance that I got in to fix and resale.  Many times Whirlpool washer owners assume the motor or the transmission is bad when they hear this horrible noise and their washer doesn’t spin or agitate.  The broken motor coupling is probably the most common no spin no agitate cause, but a dead motor, a clogged pump, or a bad timer can also cause a no spin or agitate problem.

In this post I will show you how to test your lid switch 3949247, and how to replace it.  For your convenience, you can either read the post or watch the videos listed below.

If your Whirlpool direct drive washer does not spin when in spin cycle, the first thing to check is the lid switch.  You can activate the lid switch by putting the washer in spin cycle and then using a flat head screw driver, press on the switch shown in picture below.

If your washer fails to spin in spin cycle, you will now unplug the washer, and remove the control panel.  Your washer should have either two screws located in either the front or back corner of your control panel, or some newer models have clips that need to be disengaged with a putty knife.  See pics below.

After the screws are removed, the control panel flips back.

Once the panel is flipped back, you can now detach the lid switch from the wiring harness.  Notice the color of the wires that plug into the lid switch.  The green wire in the middle is our ground wire so the two outside wires are our common wires

Once the harness is unplugged from the lid switch, take your multimeter, set it on the lowest setting for ohms and see if you get a reading of 0 or more when the lid is shut.  The lid switch shown below is good.

If you get a reading of 1, shown below then your lid switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

To remove the lid switch we will first unscrew these two screws shown here.

Then remove the cabinet by detaching the two gold clips with a flat head screw driver.  Put your screw driver in there and pry back.

After both clips are removed, you can now remove the cabinet by grabbing the cabinet from the front and tilting it back.

Once the cabinet is off, you can lay it face down on a towel so that you don’t scratch it.  This plastic plug part of the lid switch has two tabs on each side either squeeze with your hands or carefully press in with a screw driver so that you can push the plug through the hole on the cabinet.

Now all that is left to do is pry these wires out from the clip that holds it in place and then remove the 5/16 screw that is holding the ground wire in place.

Once the above screw is removed, install the new lid switch reversing your steps to put it back together.

This post is a related to my no spin post.  If you remove your clothes from the washer and their still extremely wet, and you know that your pump is draining properly, the first two items to check would be:

An item such as a sock stuck between the tub and the basket will cause tension and may cause the basket to spin slowly.If you don’t find anything stuck between the tub and basket, you likely need to replace the clutch.  A worn clutch is a very common problem with Whirlpool direct drive washers. If you are having trouble diagnosing your direct drive washer, you can purchase a service manual here.  The service manual will help you successfully diagnose your washer.

This post will help you diagnose and fix your electric dryer if it has no heat and the drum still tumbles.

Before getting started with the diagnoses, you will want to first unplug your dryer.  Once your dryer is unplugged you will need to remove the back panel of your dryer.  There are a series of hex head screws that need to be removed.  (They are usually 1/4?, but some older dryers have 5/16? head screws.)

Next locate the heating element.  Turn your multimeter to the ohm setting.  Unhook one of the terminals and test the heating element for continuity.  If your multimeter shows a reading of 1, it needs to be replaced.  The pictures below show a good heating element, thermal fuse, and high limit thermostat.

If your heating element is fine, the next thing to check is your high limit thermostat and thermal fuse.

Are you hearing a bang bang bang, when your Whirlpool Duet is washing your clothes?  Is the basket in your washing machine wobbly?  You may have a broken spider arm.  This video will help you to diagnose a broken spider arm.

Broken spider arms are a costly fix.  The spider arm in most cases isn’t sold separately from the basket.  Sometimes a broken spider arm can cause damage to the front outer tub and the rear bearing and tub, as was the case of the one I was working on in this video.  I would first suggest checking to see if your basket/spider arm is still under warranty.
